We are planning for a season start of April 17. Nights are Tuesday and Thursday at Suncor Community Leisure Centre.

In preparation for the upcoming season, we currently meet every second Wednesday (next meeting is Feb 15 – 6:45 pm at the Library) Please consider assisting in some capacity and to add your voice to making lacrosse strong in Fort Mac.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered this past year your help is very appreciated.

Thanks also to our Sponsors – without them our fees would be significantly higher. Please consider them when looking for services in Fort McMurray.

FT Services, DCS, Kydan Homes, Nyati Professional Corp, TBG, Northstar Ford, Bev Boman Real Estate, Syncrude Canada, Suncor Energy, Shell Albion, Home Hardware

Jesse Fehr, who is with Alberta Lacrosse Association Development, is making plans to come to Fort McMurray schools February 13 – 15. This will be a great opportunity to expose new players to the game. Jesse will also be available on Feb 14 for a free drop-in clinic for young players from 5 – 7 pm. Suncor Community Leisure Centre has sponsored the floor time for this. Jesse will also be available during the regular drop-in from 8:30 – 10:00 pm.

We are considering April 20th for a Coaching Clinic. The clinic could be Friday night/ Saturday or Saturday/ Sunday. I am polling to find the best times. Other weekend options are the weekend of March 24 or March 31.

If you are interested and able to help, please advise fmmla@hotmail.com of your availability for the clinic. We will also need players during the selected weekend to provide subjects to coaches. Suggested age level is Peewee, but will consider others. Please advise if you are interested in this activity.

Please see the current newsletter for more information on referees, registration and the RUSH season.

My name is Marc Andre Filion I am VP technical of the Alberta Lacrosse Referee Association, the Referee- in-Chief of the Fort McMurray region and the Jr. B tier II north league.

First, I would like to acknowledge and applaud all the parents, coaches, managers and volunteers in your lacrosse community for their immense efforts in establishing lacrosse in Fort McMurray. You have come a long way and has been no easy feat. Many of the challenges that you face are not part of the reality in most regions of Alberta. One example is that most areas do not have coaches forced to officiate minor lacrosse games due to the lack of qualified referees. We need to change this. Fort McMurray needs to have a sustainable pool of officials for all levels of the game. For this to happen, we need you! We need everyone involved to step up and accept the challenge of becoming a lacrosse official! Being a referee is not an easy job, it requires dedication but most importantly, it requires confidence! Without support from the ALRA, it would be impossible. I plan to have a referee clinic sometime before the season starts to give you a solid base on which you can develop. I hope to be your resource person and I promise to do everything within my capacity to support this project.

It may not be immediately apparent, but referees are a crucial part of the growth of lacrosse in your community. They play a crucial role in player safety and sportsmanship by ensuring objectivity in the game. I believe that we will retain more players in the game if parents feel that the sport of lacrosse is safe, fair and accountable. That is where we come in!

If the idea of ensuring players’ safety, game fairness and contributing to the growth of the sport is not enough, here is another perk: you get paid for it! Usually you have to pay a gym membership fee to workout right? Well think about it, as an official you get paid to run, blow your whistle once in a while and get in shape in the process. How better can it be? Of course, you can’t quit your day job, but it’s a way of acknowledging the time you took in learning the rules of the game!

If you would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact me

The intent is to provide fitness, fun and opportunity for skill development for graduating or call-up midgets in preparation for junior play and the opportunity for continuing juniors to maintain or enhance their skills. Seniors can come out for fun, or as we are seeing numbers of players in the community grow, there is potential to create a senior team who can provide competition for the junior players and consider tournament play.

Bring your sticks, helmets and gloves – this drop in is open for midget, junior and senior age players.

For Junior players, our season begins in April, so this time is great for conditioning.
